This striking Dragonfly Sculpture was created by sculptor Ian McMillan as a private commission, celebrating both the beauty of nature and the precision of contemporary metalwork. Inspired by the grace, lightness and movement of the dragonfly, the sculpture captures a sense of motion suspended in time, giving the impression of flight frozen at its most elegant moment.
From the outset, this commission presented a unique and rewarding challenge. The client had very specific requirements for how the sculpture should be supported and displayed within their garden, particularly regarding the design and engineering of the base. Achieving the illusion of a delicate creature in flight, while ensuring complete structural stability, required careful planning, technical expertise and creative problem-solving.
Ian worked closely with the client throughout the design process, developing and presenting several bespoke concepts for the base. Each option was carefully considered in relation to the surrounding landscape, sight lines and the overall visual impact of the piece. This collaborative approach ensured that both artistic vision and practical considerations were fully aligned.
Once the final design was approved, Ian began the meticulous process of hand-crafting every element of the sculpture. Each component was individually formed, shaped and assembled by hand, combining traditional metalworking techniques with modern engineering methods. The layered wings, intricate body structure and flowing support arm were all designed to create a strong sense of movement while maintaining a refined, sculptural elegance.
From initial concept to final installation, this commission was a true partnership between artist and client. The finished sculpture now sits harmoniously within its environment, enhancing the garden space while standing as a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork. The timeline for your commissioned sculpture is tailored to its artistic complexity and physical scale, typically ranging from 8 to 16 weeks from design approval to completion. We prioritise transparency and will provide a clear, phased schedule with your initial proposal, outlining each key milestone, from initial sculpting to final finishing, so you are informed at every step of our collaborative journey.
To formally begin the artistic process, a 50% deposit is required. This secures your exclusive place in our production schedule and allows us to dedicate the necessary time and resources to your piece. The remaining balance is due prior to the careful packing and delivery of your finished masterpiece. We work within defined budgets from our very first conversation, ensuring every creative and material detail aligns seamlessly with both your vision and investment, with complete transparency and no hidden costs.
